Governor Jensen Opens South Dakota State Fair Day

Large Minnehaha County delegation in 10 gallon hats arrived by special train for Governor's Day at the South Dakota State Fair. National corn husking contest officials and Sioux Falls bands attended while weather cleared to boost expected crowds. Treasurer Cornell reported strong gate receipts with about 4,000 on grounds by noon and Tuesday attendance at 12,100 yielding $ topical growth over 1937 figures.

A preliminary meeting at the Marvin Hughitt Hotel formed a bi partisan effort to remove the South Dakota State Fair from politics. Bachelor Will Be Retried At Winner

The attorney general’s office announced the retrial of William Bachelor, Nebraska rancher, will be held at Winner during October term. Circuit Judge John G. Bartine assigns October 10 for the trial on grand larceny charges over cattle theft in Bennett County. The previous verdict was not reached after a change of venue.

Krumbach wins grand champion 4-H beef at South Dakota Fair

Floyd Krumbach of Parker High School was named grand champion 4-H beef at the South Dakota State Fair after selecting a prize baby beeve from three on his summer feed lot. A 4-H member for three years, he has consistently won at county achievement day with Aberdeen Angus cattle and in livestock judging.

Premium Agriculture and Horticulture Awards Announced

Premium awards for agriculture and horticulture were announced today by Superintendents Frank Beimer of Sioux Falls and G W Gurney of Yankton. Horticulture sweepstakes went to Gurney and prizes to Walker’s Florist Shop Huron and various district winners. Fruit displays were praised for quality due to favorable weather. Agriculture honors included county exhibits sweepstakes Clark County and ties in Brookings and Tripp counties with Roberts County taking third. Superintendent Renner noted many exhibits fully filled the building.

Road Worker Hit By Train Near Salem

A 14-year-old McCook County road maintainer Emil Litz was severely injured when his vehicle was struck by a Chicago & North Western passenger train crossing west of Salem. He was rushed to a Mitchell hospital after the incident occurred as a special train bound for Salem carried Sioux Falls and other delegations to the state fair.

State Fair Dairy Winners Named From Brookings Sioux Falls

Leo Benson of Brookings took first in the creamery butter division with 442 points, judged by D. H. Jacobsen. Arthur Schiaffman of Erhan was second, George Toft third, and A. M. Helgans fourth. In farm butter Emily Seifeldt of Clark won with 92. Crescent Creamery Company of Sioux Falls won the cheese championship with a high rating of 94. R. A. Drunken Driver To Face Charges In Accident Death

State's Attorney E. D. Barron said charges will be filed against Joe Krogstad for the fatal auto wreck north of Sioux Falls that killed Frank C. Wallace of Hurley.
