A father of five, Frederick C. Mergner, 45, is held on murder charges after police say he shot to death Charlotte W. Robinson, a red-haired divorcee, and dumped her body on a rain slick street near the capitol. Robinson, German-born and last living with Mergner, had filed for divorce earlier this year. Det Chief Barrett said they argued Monday night, then drove the car and he fired six times. A passerby alerted police. Mergner was arrested and reportedly confessed. Arrainment postponed due to his condition. he pleaded for his children.
In Rockham the National War Fund drive will be led by the Homemakers Extension Club. At a Monday meeting at Mrs. Delphine Strassburk's home, district leadership was set with Mrs. Buss and Mrs. Hammond directing residential efforts and Mrs. Strassburz and Mrs. Mulligan guiding the business district drive. District Attorney Frederic W. Crosby said warrants were amended to charge Ross Hastings Owen McCabe and Rose Hastings with obtaining money and property under false pretenses in the marriage case involving 69 year old widow Mrs Dean Ladd Xidder and the 30 year younger itinerant tree surgeon. Hastings seeks annulment of his marriage to the woman, married in Pekin after a divorce in Peoria.
