Farm board record weighed by Fortune review

A Fortune assessment credits the Farm board with two major successes the past two years, stabilizing wheat and expanding cooperative tonnage, while detailing losses of about 200 million dollars in grain stabilization and criticisms of funding openness and staff pay. It notes the board kept wheat at 73 cents a bushel during a crisis in late 1930 and early 1931, preventing a broader rural credit collapse.

Planting trees urged to aid drought hit South Dakota

Merle J. Brown, president of the Izaak Walton league, urges broad participation in a major tree planting drive next spring. The drought damaged South Dakota forests, with replacement needed. Leaders argue for state and government tree supply at low cost to encourage farmers to plant many trees, which would provide shade, wildlife habitat, and pest control.
