Pheasants Brought to U.S. Over a Century Ago in South Dakota
Historical note traces pheasant introductions from Richard Bache’s release on the Delaware River estate to South Dakota efforts starting in 1908. Spink County plantings, Redfield Chamber support, and state releases shaped a lasting hunting legacy funded by under $20,000 for stock and about 7,000 birds bought. Since 1936, thousands moved to new sections as numbers fluctuated to about 8,000 annually relocated to areas with poor numbers.
