Doris Morrissey of Vermillion, a University of South Dakota senior, was elected Miss Dakota of 1933 by university women, edging Care Summerside. The honor requires campus leadership, three years at the university, and South Dakota birth. Doris Morrissey is active in Alpha Xi Delta and many campus groups.

Family Night At Wayland Draws Local Families
Wayland, Oct 2. Wayland Aid Society held its second monthly family night at the Community building. After the usual aid meeting, families enjoyed social time with games races and stunts. The Carl Ravenscroft family won the family race and Pearl Otto and Dorothy Ravenscroft tied for first in a musical travel story. Lunch of cake coffee and sandwiches was served with Mesdames Opal Hart and Catherine Winegar in charge.

Farmers Union Meeting in Alpena Highlights Talks and Essay
Farmers Union members gathered at Alpena school auditorium on Wednesday with Harry Knox presiding. Fred Piper Letcher spoke, Supt V J Linn and Leslie Grace also addressed the meeting. Miss Maxine Culver won first in state for her essay Money and Credit and will present at the Omaha national convention in November. Michigan residents contributed readings and musical numbers by the Meyer sisters Mia Hermann Kunze and Neda Kunze. A membership drive added several new members and a luncheon followed.

Floyd Strain Sentenced to Life in SD Penitentiary
Olivet North Dakota October 2 Floyd Strain was sentenced by Judge A B Beck to life in the South Dakota penitentiary for being an accomplice in the murder of Fred Woll 22 son of the Kaylor state bank cashier during the April 20 bank robbery. The jury verdict followed a trial that began Tuesday and included an unsuccessful alibi defense.

Hobo Day Parade Attracts Crowds in Brookings
In Brookings on October 21, a crowd estimated between 15,000 and 25,000 watched State College students march in the annual Hobo Day parade through town. The 75 unit procession featured bands, floats, stunts, and burlesque caricatures, headed by student association leaders and the retiring Hobo King and Queen. After coronation, a city fire signal sounded as students dispersed for the afternoon football game against North Dakota University, the day’s highlight.
