CIO advised the Denver Federation convention of its plan to hold a preliminary Washington meeting the week of October 25. In Toledo on October 15 a youth, identified as Thomas Evans, pleaded guilty to theft in a home and was ordered to Ohio State Penitentiary by Judge James Martin. Evans declined to identify his parents, whose family is believed prominent in South Dakota politics, and preferred prison over disgracing them.
Washington October 15 A major topic in the capital was whether next month's special session of Congress will yield reconciliation between Democratic factions in the Senate. Republicans and Democrats alike await the answer, seeing it as a test for the administration's program and a potential realignment based on beliefs rather than labels. Senators Minton and Logan expressed optimism that Democrats would largely back the president, while Wheeler and O Mahoney faced uncertain futures amid party tensions.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Gray and daughter Mrs Roy Rose of Watertown were hospitalized in Pierre after a crash near Harrold. The car driven by Mrs Rose was sideswiped as they attempted to pass a truck. Gray sustained a dislocated neck with temporary partial paralysis. Mrs Gray had head and arm injuries. Mrs Rowe was uninjured.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden warned Italy that British patience is exhausted as London and Paris prepare a showdown on Spain. The nine powers meet to decide withdrawal plans for foreign volunteers, with France and Britain aiming for a quick agreement and possible countermeasures if talks fail. The Times and observers report skepticism Italy will withdraw, while other nations weigh belligerent rights and aid to the Valencia government.
Indianapolice authorities and FBI agents questioned James Dalhover, survivor of the Al Brady gang, about the Minneman slaying and other matters before any decision on federal charges. Dalhover, jailed in Marion County, reflected on a life of constant running and danger.
Miller Cafe on North Main Street burned last night causing an estimated 10000 in damages. The fire started in the basement of the frame building owned by Mrs. S. W. Murphy and was first noticed around 9 30 p m. Mrs Butler and her family escaped, though their basement goods were destroyed. Insured losses included the building valued at 7000 and cafe equipment plus household property valued between 4000 and 5000. Firefighters prevented spread to adjacent structures including a Red Owl store and Miller Garatia office.
Shanghai area reports intense combat as Chinese forces counter Japanses advance along a 25 mile front northwest of Shanghai. Casualties include three Japanese dead and three wounded in Hongkew. Chinese artillery and infantry gains disrupted Japanese positions, with heavy damages and several civilians killed or wounded in the International Settlement. Chinese foreign minister Wang Chung-Hui appeals to Americans to avoid action aiding Japan.
Centralia reports Rev J K Alichele, former Hudson Orphans Home superintendent, will plead guilty to one of six charges of immorality and rape. State's Attorney Ward Holt announced the arrests followed police questioning of a minister connected to the home.
