Indian Weapons In U Museum At Vermillion

Vermillion October 14 Indian good medicine that adorned Sioux medicine men in buffalo dance ten years ago now represents a phase of the redman life in the University of South Dakota museum. The bows remain unstrung until used and ten arrows fill the quiver. The exhibit shows arrow points of many kinds and a belief that a good hunter could shoot through a buffalo if bones are not hit. Sioux knives are sharpened on one side and kept keen by files. A fleshing knife made of elk horn and a flint or steel scraper is also shown. Hides were peeled from buffalos and only needed game was killed.

Potato Crop Lifesaver For Preston Farmers

Lake Preston area farmers rely on potatoes as a financial lifeline often planting five to fifty acres yearly. Even when prices dip to twenty five cents, the next year’s gains compensate. Some large growers earn from two to five thousand dollars annually, with one farmer near Oldham selling thirty six thousand dollars worth in a single year. Potatoes yield 100 to 150 bushels per acre and fetch about one dollar per bushel for truckers, enabling farmers to hold other grain at low prices.
