No Fires In Year Marks Mellette Fire Dept Progress

The village of Mellette celebrated a year without a fire alarm, praising its volunteer fire department. Chief Roy Dickerson noted extensive improvements including a $870 truck valve, $600 chemical truck, $850 chemical tanks, and $40 ladders. The department answered five calls in the year and earned high praise from a state fire inspector for prevention and equipment.

Hitchcock Pioneer Moves to Make Home in Huron

Ben Anderson, an early Hitchcock area pioneer, relocates to Huron to live with his daughter at 1065 Ono Avenue SW. He arrived before many current residents and walked from Huron to Redfield in his youth. After 48 years on his Hitchcock farm, he kept farming until his move.

Heid Funeral Services For Fransfort Youth

Funeral services were held for a 15 year old boy from Fries Fort area Austin Lowe who died after a seizure while wandering near Frankfort. He was born in Getty, Libor, and is survived by Almira Donald Ralph and Violet, a nephew Byron Sloat of Cetsysburg, and grandmother Mrs. Matilda in Frankfort. Rev S Shepard led the services and burial followed in Frankfort.

The Wessington Woman's Study club met at Mrs Leona Rebsahm's home with current events discussed. Mrs P A Young was elected secretary, replacing Mrs E Claude Smith who moved to Lake Andes, and Mig T McKay and Mrs P A Young presented "Women of the Near East." Wessington Rebekah lodge cleared about $50 in their presentation of Corporal Eagan two nights last week. The show played to two full houses. The comedy was staged under the direction of the Universal Producing Company of Fairfield Iowa.

Wessingtonian Raises Peanuts And Tobacco

In Wessington on October 14 special report Charles Prohaska shows a peanut plant bearing 26 large peanuts and several undeveloped pods hindered by brenth. He also grew a tobacco plant in his garden drawing many visitors this summer to see these southern crops attempted in South Dakota.

Waormen voters travel to Brookings for a three day meeting with South Da Vina Tergsre of Women Voters. October 17 18. State president Mrs BE W Feige of Huron met with Mrs BT Green general chairman for arrangements and with Mrs M Lampson state chairman of social hygiene state board of the league. Mr is participating as president of Girie league host club. Meetings in Camnedic Library with banquet Friday night.

Five Mobridge Scouts Earn Eagle Honors

Five Mobridge Boy Scouts of America units earned the Eagle Scout rank at a special meeting in the high school auditorium. Norvin Ovrum led the ceremonies as executives conducted the event, recognizing new Eagle Scouts Guy DeVany, Robert De Vans, Overt Fuller, Quentin Harris, and Fred Carey.

Lake Preston to Get New Library

Lake Preston will soon have a public library under the Civic Improvement bill. The effort began with the Civic club and donations from local organizations and individuals, including $50 from the Lake Preston post American Legion and support from the Free Library Commission and Carnegie library of Brookings. Local residents named include H. Lloyd, Alice Lewis, Mrs. Harry Whipkey, Jo Funk, Mary E. Brennan, George McCandless, Mrs. Harmon Napperiud, Mrs. Warry Cole, Mrs. C. A. Butter, W. Brennan, Mrs. Lure Carlson, and Mrs. Ray Tower. The library is slated to open the first week in November.

Funeral for Wessington Resident George Dewhurst

Funeral services were held Saturday for George Dewhurst 77 of Wessington who died suddenly at his home six miles south of town after a three month illness. A native of England he was a longtime member of the Wessington Odd Fellows and an electric worker in that lodge. His daughter accompanied the remains to Toowa for burial. his wife Mrs. Dewhurst remains in Wessington.
