Democrats in South Dakota rally around Oscar Fosheim pledging elimination of the state sales tax and a shift to a gold ore tax to ease burden on farmers. Powell Files £20,000 Libel Suit in Circuit Court

A. W. Powell state Democratic chairman filed a $20,000 libel suit in the circuit court against J. O. H. Bottom Jr., president of the Young Republican League, alleging false statements at a Dy Smet rally harmed his reputation and business. The petition claims Bottom made malicious, injurious remarks asserting Powell mishandled money on WPA projects and disseminated them through newspapers. Lawyers Jerry Gauer and Henry Mundt of Sioux Falls prepared the petition. Also noted is Allison Nintaman from Wessington Springs receiving a Columbus Law School scholarship and a share of the Bathgate scholarship. values not disclosed.

Minnesota Governor Grants Broad Powers in Forest Fire Emergency

Governor Elmer A. Benson issued an executive order empowering Adjutant General E. A. Walsh to mobilize Minnesota National Guard units and evacuate residents in six northern counties. Beadle County Agricultural Conservation committee chair Bil Martin announces that farmers can no longer assign payments for loans under the AAA program. The first step will be a performance survey of cooperating farmers, with checks for participants in the 1938 conservation program expected to arrive in late November.

Million Dollar Oil Fire Smothers in Linden

A massive blaze at the Cities Service refinery near Linden New Jersey destroyed millions of gallons of oil kerosene and gasolene, injuring many and causing officials to estimate losses around 1 million dollars. Firefighters contained the flames by dawn, leaving eight acres of tank farm charred and supporting personnel to investigate the cause.

Hungary to hand Czechoslovak land to four power talks

Hungary declared its territorial claims against Czechoslovakia would be referred to a four power conference after the failure of talks at Komarom. The Hungarian foreign minister said Budapest would hand over the claims, risking immediate mobilization, while Czech and Slovak negotiators prepared new proposals and troops remained near the border.
