Warns Against Potato Dry Rot in Storage
BROOKINGS October 12 Special Pot ato growers were advised by P Swenson associate agronomist at Sue College to take measures to reduce dry rot in storage this coming winter. He warned that a substantial amount of dry rot will be present in potatoes kept in storage and that wilt observed in fields serves as a criterion for storage rot. He cautioned on control, recommending sorting healthiest tubers, storing in a dry cool place slightly above freezing, avoiding bruising, using formaldehyde solution for bin treatment, and regular winter inspections. He noted related bulletins for further guidance and described how Fusarium causes wilt and dry rot, with methods to detect infection by inspecting tuber ends.
