Berry Defends 8 D Sales Tax in Campaign Stop

Governor Tom Berry defended the state sales tax saying pennies have funded nearly $1,000,000 for local school districts and about $500,000 for distressed schools between 1993 and 1938. He argued the tax eliminated the state levy, leaving real property taxes to local governments. Opponent Leslie Jensen criticized payroll growth, but Berry noted many workers are on federal payrolls and claimed the state ran a million dollars a year less than under Green. J. W. Bicknell dismissed Chandler Gurney as senator by remote control. if elected, South Dakota would have a nationally unusual remote controlled senator.

Soil Saving Function Of Dams Built By Erosion Agency

Rapid City October 9 The soil saving function of dams built by the Soil Conservation Service in Region 9 was emphasized by erosion control and moisture conservation agency spokesmen. In this plains region including Montana the Dakotas and Wyoming, H J Tschudy regional conservator at Rapid City S D noted about 60 water conservation dams completed or under construction by the Service or its direction in a little more than a year. Dams range from stock dams to substantial storage structures on demonstration areas cooperators or under Emergency Drought Relief. Tschudy said engineers must balance water needs with local farmers and ranchers dollars and cents benefits as part of the Service policy from crop rotation to strip farming and contour furrowing. Despite drought, dams completed supplied water for all season and attracted waterfowl. No dam is worthwhile without water in extreme droughts. location and proven worth in erosion control, water for livestock and communities, plus wildlife benefits justify their use in farming and range areas. Dams are designed as permanent structures with good engineering. natural spillways lower costs where possible, generally aiming for about 10 dollars per acre foot of water capacity. Some costs as low as that, with higher costs only where justified. Stockman may use only part of ranges where water is available, allowing grazed areas to recover vegetation and reduce erosion. When placed carefully, stock dams transform idle land into productive use and relieve pressure on surrounding areas, while ditches help spread overflow to protect grass and crop land and pay dividends in winter feed.

Home Grown Corn Better Says South Dakota Agronomist

BROOKINGS Oct. Spacial One good nibble grown in your own corn field is worth three big ears from far away. Dr. AS Hume, head of the South Dakota State College agronomy department, urges farmers to save locally grown seed corn. He says one bushel plants eight acres next spring and that corn is best when drilled at lower density. Studies at several stations show seed can move 100 miles north with stress, but near distances are best for proper ripening. Farther than 100 miles south may delay ripening and lower quality.
