Mellette schools stress music in new program

Mellette public schools launch an expanded music department under the theme Music Appreciation. High school students earn quarter credits yearly, with applied music credit and piano lessons offered. Lucille Sherman directs grades one through four, Nellie Swayze grades five through eight, Professor Forbes oversees high school classes. Plans include a toy orchestra, portable phonographs, new records, and Damrosch materials guiding age appropriate curricula. Electric tote arms and radio amplification are featured in monographs.

Frankfort Farmer Reports Uneven Wheat Yields

Frankfort farmer Joh Johnson reports two wheat varieties grown on adjacent fields. Marquis wheat yielded six bushels per acre, while Marvel wheat produced about 14 bushels per acre on 30 acres. Marvel, a hard milling wheat, will be used as seed next year.

Raymond “Bud” Johnson, a Howard businessman and sportsman, recounts catching a 15 pound northern pike at Lake Madison near Harry Mars Beach. The 35 inch fish, hooked with a minnow, was caught in seven feet of water and displayed at Beschta’s meat market. The capture took about 20 minutes.

Children of Wesleyan Missionaries Enter Dakota Wesleyan Freshmen

Mitchell Mest Carhart and Maurine Carhart, children of Dr and Mrs Carhart longtime missionaries in Chile, enroll as freshmen at Dakota Wesleyan University. Carhart taught in mission schools since 1906 and serves as Chile mission treasurer. Mrs Carhart led a deaconess school in Santiago. Their younger brother Homer is a Concepcion high school senior likely to join next year.

Hand County Schools 100 Percent In Association

Specially word has been received by officials from Sioux Falls of the South Dakota Educational Association that teachers in rural schools of Hand County are 100 percent members. The county was sixth in the state to report complete membership. Ethel Berry, county superintendent of schools, conveyed the notification.

F. E. Johnson was elected student of the Cavour Sunday school at the annual meeting. Miss Beden Mack was chosen as assistant. A Buffalo County girl who struggled with schoolwork last year and was in poor health spent two weeks at Camp Wanzer in the Black Hills and has now regained health.

WESSINGTON Oct 4 Special Russell Borkhuis and Thomas Gaughn escaped serious injury when their cars collided returning from Wayland. One car tried to pass, causing damage as one lost a wheel and the other had two broken wheels. Borkhuis suffered minor bruises. no other injuries reported.

Bennett County Leads Dakota Farm Growth in Five Years

Pierre October 4 Bennett county the youngest in the state posted the largest ten year growth in farmers among South Dakota counties with a 45 percent increase reaching 495 farmers. The area totals 241700 acres with 120000 acres cultivated this year. Flax remains leading crop with 37250 acres, wheat 34300, corn 24200, oats 12509, rye 4700, potatoes 300. Bennett supports 22700 cattle 1500 milk cows 3460 calves 4000 sheep 1165 lambs 6600 horses 141 colts and 21000 chickens 3500 turkeys. Educational growth and new towns bode well for rapid progress in coming years.
