Many Out Of State Hunters At Preston Lake

Openers for the duck and pheasant season drew many non resident hunters to Preston Lake. The gathering included visitors from Daytona Beach Illinois Rockford Dixon Riverside Wisconsin Appleton Oneida and Seymour. The largest party was led by L King Je executive of the Watkins Company from Winona Minnesota, who has used the area as hunting headquarters each autumn since pheasant hunting was legalized in South Dakota. Women hunters showed a notable rise locally and across the field.

St Lawrence High Plans Homecoming Festivities

The annual St Lawrence High School homecoming will occur October 11 with a daytime football game between the St Lawrence Warriors and Miller Rustlers. An alumni banquet follows in the evening along with carnival events, queen and marshal crowning, and two dances.

Death losses are heavy, especially among unvaccinated colts and young horses, with one state showing nearly a 50 percent rise in cases versus last year. Highmore Homecoming Set For October 25

Highmore holds its twelfth annual Homecoming on October 25 with Pi rate Day festivities. Donna Jean Harris chairs the events. Bob Hawkins directs the morning program. Jack Harkness leads the parade. Howard Quirk runs the dance. Mary Holtzman handles advertising. The schedule includes coronation and costume judging in the morning, a parade and Highmore versus Ft. Pierre football game in the afternoon, then the all high school play June in January followed by a dance.

County Agent Leonard Ladd reports that most grasshopper eggs concentrate along field edges roads and fence lines. The recommended control is to destroy eggs before hatching through fall cultivation using plows discs and moldboardless implements to cover or expose eggs, with several tools proving effective when used in the next month.

Goetz Pleads For Highway Caution In Safety Appeal

PIERRE Oct 3 P Supt W J Goetz of the state motor patrol urged motorists to start a little sooner on trips and drive a little slower after a head on crash killed three men. He stressed the need to reduce highway tolls and cautioned that high speeds are usually involved in fatal crashes. He urged proper head on and tail lights and properly adjusted headlights.

1,500 Cans of Food for St Lawrence Dormitory

Mrs Rose Walker dean of the St Lawrence dormitory reports 1,500 cans of vegetables and pickles canned from the dorm garden for the school year. The tally includes 337 peas 80 corn 552 beans 29 tomato juice 78 chile sauce 301 tomatoes 6 gallons beet pickles 44 quarts cucumber sweet pickles 33 quarts bread and butter pickles 130 quarts dill pickles and two barrels of cucumbers awaiting canning.
