Augusta Wins Flood Battle Amid Savannah Floodwaters
Augusta residents claimed victory in their battle against the Savannah River flood as water receded after reaching 44.3 feet. The levee held with 1500 volunteers adding sandbags, while a railroad bridge span was washed away and several power dams nearby were wrecked. Power restoration relieved Augusta’s water scarcity. The storm’s regional toll included three deaths in New Jersey and one in Pennsylvania and widespread transit disruption along the coast.
