Irrigation May Shape Future Development In S D
Editor notes the Case Wheeler Act of 1939 opens federal funding for irrigation in the plains. South Dakota projects like Rapid Valley near Rapid City and Angostura near Hot Springs gain momentum as the Bureau of Reclamation drives construction with WPA CCC labor and Farm Security Admin support. Costs per acre range from about $2 to $4 annually, with repayment over 40 years, and the program aims to stabilize farm populations and raise land values through federal reclamation projects.
