U S Sailor Is Really A Landlubber Midwest Physical Gems
Washington Navy. The American sailor is a landlubber at heart from uplands and prairies. The average recruit is 19 years old, 5 feet 8 inches, 145 to 148 pounds, with three years of high school. Three of four fail the first physical test, one in ten flunks the intelligence test. Recruits undergo multiple examinations before training in physical drills, naval etiquette, and combat basics. Pay starts at $21 monthly with uniform and three months of drills, then progress to seaman ranks or fireman. Hundreds of ratings await, with shore schools training 14,000 yearly and aviation studies expanding fast. The navy plans tripling personnel to 460,000 sailors and 40,000 officers, with officer paths via Naval Academy, Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, and aviation cadets.
