4-H Clubs Boost Dairy Industry Growth in 1920s

At the National Creamery Buttermakers Association convention in St Paul Mn H M Jones notes dairy calf clubs expanded from 44459 members in 1924 to 29468 in 1928 across the United States. He cites dairy clubs rising from 2.33 to 4.43 percent of all clubs and dairy animal ownership increasing from 14415 to 35 units per club in South Dakota and nationwide.

Enduring South Dakota dairy clubs reshape Marshall county

The South Dakota dairy club movement in Marshall county built a nucleus of a superior herd through 4-H members over six years. More than 500 cows and calves of good breeding were added, with 300 youths and parents learning to maintain food cows and proper management. A creamery, purebred bull, and two marketing groups emerged, shaping future dairy leaders and dairy-minded communities.
