Hunters Urged to Skip Pheasant Split Season

South Dakota game and fish commission asked hunters to refrain from pheasant shooting in the late split season opening Friday in some counties. A weathered, heavy sleet and snow blamed for many birds lost in fields near the Minnesota and Iowa borders.

Judge Polley To Lead South Dakota Supreme Court

Pierre reports Judge Co. Polley was designated to preside over the South Dakota supreme court for 1941. He first won election to the high court bench in 1912. Judge St. Clair Smith of Aberdeen has been presiding judge during 1940.

Wool Bests Parity Among South Dakota Farm Goods

Brookings reports a state college chart showing wool has averaged above parity in 17 of the last 25 years, the only major farm product with a sustained tilt toward favorable prices. Beef cattle and sheep fare well when wool is included, while grains often lag, with corn above parity 40 percent of the time. The study warns that high prices alone do not guarantee prosperity, urging corrective action to improve purchasing power for South Dakota farmers.

Poultry Industry Council Formed in South Dakota

South Dakota forms the South Dakota Poultry Industry Council to coordinate hatchery breeder and marketing groups. Members include the South Dakota Poultry Improvement Association and the Poultry, Butter, and Egg Association with associate groups from State College and state agencies. The council aims to unify views across production, breeding, processing, and marketing of poultry.

Miller Candidacy Upheld By Court In Aurora County

The South Dakota Supreme Court refused a rehearing in Paul Bakewell's bid to remove Democrat W C Miller from the Aurora County state's attorney ballot. The high court affirmed a lower court ruling that allowed Miller to run although he was not a state resident when he filed his nominating petition.

South Dakota Forms Poultry Council To Boost Industry

The council will consolidate efforts to promote sanitation and disease control for poultry, address welfare issues, and foster consumer awareness of poultry nutrition. It will advise on needed research and regulation in the state, with the industry contributing 13 to 14 million dollars annually to farmers and ranking among the top agricultural wealth sources.

Lane School Carnival Features Burnt Corkers Minstrel Show

The Lane school carnival drew a large crowd at the gym last Saturday night. The highlight was the minstrel show The Burnt Corkers with group numbers solos and humorous dialogue. Directors were Harold Mallet and Miss Roberta Crockett. Irene Erickson was crowned queen and Edmund Berg was king, attended by Doreen Scheel and Gerald Endahi.

Women's Society Meeting at Virgil Reports Mitchell Convention

The Women s Society of Christian Service met at Mrs D H Barnes home with eight members and one visitor. Mrs Barnes reported on the Mitchell convention. Plans were made for an oyster supper and candy sale on December 19. Lunch served by three members. January meeting set at Mrs W M Thomas home.

Bride Elect Honored At Lane Shower

Miss Elsie Larson bride elect was guest of honor at a miscellaneous shower in the Methodist Church basement. Sponsors were Mrs. Will Schwabauer and daughters Mrs. C. J. Miller Mrs. E. W. Pate and Mrs. Theodore Swenson. The afternoon featured a scrap book of advice and crafts provided by several helpers.

Four From Wolsey To Enter Huron Contest

Wolsey students will represent the Wolsey C L at a contest in Huron Friday this week. Winners of the local contest were Lyle Miller for first and second grades, Glen Pace Christopherson for third and fourth, Marjorie Langbehn for fifth and sixth, and Bruce Meyer for seventh and eighth. Judges were Mrs. Harry Nelson, Miss Geraldine Dondelinger, and Miss Maxane Cogswell.

Wolsey High to Stage Carnival and Queen Election

Wolsey High School plans its annual carnival on November 22 with queen candidates Mil dred Meyer Phyllis Anderson and Lila Hein chosen last Friday. King candidates to be selected this week as advance ticket sales begin and committees named. Irma Williams of Gann Valley High School won the essay contest entry for state competition by the South Dakota Public Health Association.

Misaddressed Jetters Highlight Post Office Issue

Four million of 8.5 million jetters handled annually by the British Post Office are misaddressed with bad spelling as the common fault. A misaddressed letter aimed at Harwich Harbour read “Arijaba” revealing ongoing address errors. The text also notes that no star is seen year round at the equator, but all stars are visible part of the year.
