Warm Hen House Profits Boost Egg Production Says Extension Poultryman
Brookings South Dakota farmers are urged to warm poultry houses for winter to raise egg output as the Food for Defense program expands. State College extension poultryman Raphael Brandrnet notes many houses are dilapidated and can be repaired at little cost using farm-made materials. He recommends straw or sorghum bundles to insulate, roof lofts for warmth, drafts controlled by shutters, baffleboard ventilators, and dropping boards to keep litter clean and reduce disease risk. Dirt floors should be replaced with higher soil for drainage.
