All University day honors awarded at South Dakota campus

Vermillion May 23. Prizes and honors were announced at a general convocation opening All University day. Robert Rempfer won the Clark M. Young prize for top overall scholarship. Ruth Waggoner received the John G. Doe prize for English diction and clarity. Multiple awards were given across departments including Bar Association prize to George Schlegner and seven debate squad members receiving $00. Other top prize recipients included Edna Swenson, Arno Luker, and Katherine Gale among many. The ceremony featured remarks by Ray E. Willy and University President Herman G. James.

End of School Year Celebrated in Alpena

Alpena May 2 Special reports end of school year with picnics. First and second grade pupils enjoyed a pleasant outing at the school house while third and fourth grade pupils went to Rodman Grove. Florence Smith, a colorents teacher, had her department discontinued.

Lake Preston Pupils Win In Poster Contest

Lake Preston May 23 Special awards in the Poppy Day poster contest sponsored by the American Legion auxiliary. Winners span grades from first to eighth with multiple students earning first and second place in each division. Judges were Mrs. RB Hi Evans and Mrs HA Ashbaugh. Committee members were Mrs. David Paterson Jr and Mrs. Ray Howell. Unsure which poster will advance to the state contest.

Alpena High School Holds Largest Graduation Class

Graduation exercises were held in the Alpena high school auditorium with music from the orchestra and violin solo. Rev Lloyd Rising spoke, Charles Brammer presented diplomas to 24 graduates, the largest class to graduate from Alpena High School.

Bancroft Seniors Receive Diplomas at Graduation

Bancroft high school held commencement exercises Friday evening with Supt. Fred Gellerman delivering the address. Valedictorian Loyd Fuerstenau spoke on Education and Citizenship while salutatorian Harold Rusche discussed Educational value of high school. Diplomas were presented by School Board president Harold Rusche. Principal Barnes announced year end awards.

Lake Preston Poet Receives National Recognition

Lake Preston poet Mrs Daizy Butler learns her poem Phantom ships was chosen by the Paebar company of New York for their 1883 anthology. The work appeared in Psagus petals and was highlighted in various South Dakota literary venues including Pasque Petals and Samshing magazine.

Erickson Band to Perform at Ruskin Park Forestburg

Erickson's 14 piece Marigold Winter Garden Band from Minneapolis is slated to appear at the Ruskin park pavilion. Manager Richard Sejicha notes new lighting and a brilliant, well decorated hall as Ruskin park hosts a series of summer musical events despite earlier bad weather. Patrons from Huron and Mitchell areas have attended picnics and golfers frequented the park's nine hole course.

Werner Accusations False Connor Responds in Custer

James Connor forest supervisor of the Harney National Forest in Custer said he declined to comment on charges by Congressman T B Werner alleging favoritism in camp administration. Connor urged Werner to investigate before speaking and said he feels safe about his conduct and would let Werner investigate if he wishes.

Ghosts by Ibsen chosen for college commencement play

Sioux Falls College division of dramatic production selects Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts for commencement. It will be staged May 25 and 27 for the public and May 28 for students at the YMCA Little Theatre. Eleanor Fitzgerald of Sioux Falls plays Regina and Forest Jones of Trent plays Engstrand in a highly realistic production guided by Prof. A. Coe Gray.

Alpena W.C.T. U Conducts Child Welfare Meeting

Alpena on May 23, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union held a child welfare session at Mrs. J. D. Skull’s home. Mrs. W. J. Page led the program, with scripture reading by Mrs. J. D. Evans and prayer by Mrs. W. B. Leighton.

Redfield May 23 Special Lieutenant Governor H A Ustrud of South Dakota with W C Botkin secretary of the South Dakota Retail Merchants association addressed Redfield citizens in the courthouse community room. His main topic was why the new gross income law was not satisfactory. After delivering his message he visited Emil Behmids farm near Cottonwood Lake and spoke to a house crowded with Western union members and farmers union members.

Blunt Schools Conclude Year In Blunt

Blunt Schools closed for the year after a busy closing week. Superintendent Jensen hosted seniors and teachers at a striot breakfast at Mitchell cafe. Commencement featured invocations, speeches by Charles L. Byde of Pierre, and diplomas presented by Superintendent Jensen and Rev. Kozel. Graduates include Laura Albertus, Lucille Brown, Helen Burris, Harold Carlson, and Grace Tennyson among others. Awards honored Enma Howard and Grace Tennyson for scholastic and debate achievements. seventh and eighth grade grade awards were announced.

Barbara Cheney wins dramatic division in seventh and eighth grade declamatory contest. Barbara also takes humorous division. Several picnics marked Saturday, the Blunt schools regular closing day.

Final Concert Given By University Band Vermillion

The University of South Dakota band from Vermillion made its final appearance in a public concert with 80 members led by A I Ireland. The group had a busy season performing at student pep meetings basketball and football games leading the South Dakota parade taking part in the Military Inspection and appearing in Sioux Falls for the Dakota Relays.

Wellington Springs May 2 Special meeting of the Kiwanians club was held at Conegregational church with Jancheon served. Arrangements made for a June 6 visit to Sion Falls. Eva Marie Ansted read from Pollyanna at college and J Li Sedgewick spoke on a Washington trip.
