Fight On WPA Is Nearly Over
Washington May 22. After two administration victories the House fight over next year's relief funds narrowed to minor WPA spend restrictions for 975.65 million dollars for eight months starting July 1. Democrats defeated a Republican bid to decentralize via direct grants to communities and blocked a plan to raise funds to 2.232 billion for a 12-month period. Rep. Tabor urged decentralization to curb waste, Rep. Cannan warned it would abolish the WPA and cut rolls. Rep. Casey pressed for higher funding. Carmody asked adding a year to finish PWA projects. about 330 projects would miss the June 30 deadline.
