Humble Start to Cigar Legacy in Huron's Rise
John A. Sauer arrived in Huron May 26, 1880 after a frail start and theft left him penniless. He built a prominent cigar factory that, with his father, helped shape the city’s industry for over six decades and erected key downtown structures including the State Theatre building. Sauer gained fame as a tobacco expert, mastering leaf grades and state origins, before retiring at age 54 amid changing markets and machine-made cigars. He spent winters in San Diego and left two children, Mrs. Max Roght and John P. Sauer, in Huron.
