Too Much Wheat Is Grown Says Officials and Farmers

Washington May 17 1915 farm economists report over two million U S farmers grow wheat and production may top one billion bushels this year Yet weather cut winter wheat area 322 percent and output may not exceed six hundred million bushels for domestic use A surplus from prior years of three hundred thirty million bushels is expected by July 1 Secretary Wallace aims to raise prices or reduce production through voluntary domestic allotments with processing taxes and trade pacts to support farmers and ensure a higher return The plan would reward reduced output while keeping other wheat sold at world prices and would be shaped by processors growers and handlers in a formal meeting with adoption hoped for next season

Lane High seniors honor teachers with tokens of appreciation

In May 11 ceremony at Show Appreciation Lane, the senior lass of Lane High presented English teacher Miss Anna Redman a necklace and bracelet for coaching the senior class play. Class sponsor Mr. Sherburne received a leather afold.

Highmore Speaker Returns From National Forensic Contest

Miss Lois Buswell and Donald Gibbs return from Wooster Ohio where Gibbs competed in the national forensics contest. Gibbs placed second in the Platte contest then was eliminated in later rounds. Buswell, a Huron College and University of Wisconsin graduate, plans summer study at Madison and will resume teaching English at Highmore next fall.

St Lawrence Pupils Host Annual School Exhibit

St Lawrence with heavy rain attendance held its annual school exhibit showcasing work from all grades. After viewing, attendees gathered in the gym for a musical program led by Professor Christianson of Huron. The lower grades performed marshers, the girls glee club sang, and duets by Dorothy O Neill with Lloyd Nelson and Richard Wright with John Wright highlighted the program.

Pupils Enjoy Annual School Picnic At Cottonwood Lake

Juniors freshmen and seventh and eighth graders visited Cottonwood lake for a school picnic with Miss Shearer and Mr Adier. After lunch they roller skated until about five then returned for the evening meal and went to Redfield for a show.

Publisher W. H. Conrad to speak at State College event

Brookings May 17 W H Conrad publisher of the Medford Wis Star News will headline the evening session of the third annual Newspaper Day at State College Friday May 19. Conrad a director of the National Editorial association and former Wisconsin Press association president 1932 specializes in classified advertising in his weekly paper.

Keith In Charge Of Lake Preston Pool

Kieth will lead the Lake Preston swimming pool this year with Leo Funk as assistant. Norman, the previous first assistant, has passed the Red Cross test and will hand over duties after graduating from Lake Preston High School last year and studying at Pasadena. He plans to return home to assume leadership tasks at the pool.

Lake Preston Fresh Present Comedy Skit at High School Assembly

The jhigh school assembly featured a fresh man skit with first appearance by freshmen. Cast included Mildred Mack Viola Rogholt Ethelyn Engels Crystal Iverson Ruth Matson Ruth Streeter Solveig Eid Dorothy Bentley Archie Hayden Jesse Nordhagen with Janet Plowman as teacher. Other acts included Frank Larson readings two numbers by Dorothy Bentley Engels Eid Jimmy Goggins reading and Lillian Setbacken piano. Roy Koppernd led the program as student body president.

Lake Preston Seniors Visit Brookings for All-College Day

Lake Preston high school seniors joined an all college day by visiting Brookings to study institutions, continuing a yearly sociology trip with Miss Vivian Rice and Supt A A Coulson. In Lane, Lane High School seniors were entertained at the J W Sherburne home with contests, guessing games, and a two course lunch.

Lutheran church members plan plow for ill Ralph Brandenburg

In Mitchell, May 17 special report notes congregation members will plow corn ground for Ralph Brandenburg who is very ill in a Mitchell hospital. Also from Esmond, May 11 special reports one and a half inches of rain in ten days aiding small grain crops and pastures expected to advance.

All-College Day Draws Pupils From Across State

Brookings May 11 More than 400 students from 24 high schools visited the State college campus for All-College Day. They toured exhibits and facilities, watched a home economics style show, heard a May fete, and ended with an all-college program after a military band concert. Miss Louise Coffey of Brookings presided over the Maypole dance. ></s>

Rain fell for six consecutive days totaling 13 inches according to a gauge kept by Ed Riemath. The driest fields prior to the wet spell will benefit stalled grain and help moisture reach crops in the Hitchcock area during May.

Mrs J W Sherburne and Mrs Adolph Noltensmier hosted at the Sherburne home for Mrs C A Mackey. Six bridge tables played with Mrs P W Theis taking high score and Mrs G E Johnson consolation. A two course lunch was served and Mrs Mackey received several gifts.

Change Meeting Date Alpena May 17 Special

The 1 Women's Christian Temperance union will meet at the home of Mrs J Shull Friday afternoon this week instead of Wednesday due to a free clinic at the Methodist church led by Dr Lottie Bigler of the state health board. Richard Keolbeck and Selmer Lillslang hosted Lane high school juniors and seniors for an evening of games and lunch. Ray King named clerk at Wessington post office replacing Hazel King. King moved from Redfield where he worked in a store.
