Heat and moisture key to grasshopper hatching
Prof. H C Severin of State College Entomology says temperature and soil moisture govern hatching of four injurious grasshopper species. Eggs of two-striped, lesser migratory and red-legged hatch at 75 F or higher for three to five days with sufficient moisture, while the differential eggs hatch about two weeks later. Hatching timing varies with soil type and sun exposure, with warm spells likely triggering large hatchings and requiring repeated poisoned bait distributions to control hoppers. Wheat exports on July 1 across four top countries are forecast at over 100 million bi ahela below last year.
