Landon Wins South Dakota Presidential Delegates by Narrow Margin
In South Dakota on May 1, Governor Alf M. Landon of Kansas captured the eight Republican presidential preference delegates by a narrow margin as returns from 1,953 precincts were tallied. Landon led Borah in total votes and the tally suggested a Western candidate preference, with subsequent precincts expected to tighten or widen the gap as final unofficial counts came in. Down-ballot races showed incumbents building leads in congressional contests and J. Chandler Gurney extending his lead for the U.S. Senate nomination.
