Smogard Elected Mayor as New Huron City Manager Interim
Smogard, a retired Huron businessman, was chosen mayor as the old city commission was replaced by a city manager administration. The nine member board delayed action on a permanent manager to allow more time for applicants while naming Smogard temporary manager without pay. The vote for mayor was six to three in favor of Smogard on a secret nominating ballot. A separate proposal to enforce the 1909 gas franchise ordinance setting a maximum rate of 1.50 per thousand cubic feet was tabled for a month amid debate over gas pricing and local applicants for the manager post.

Ex Convicts Shot By Farmer In Arkansas Woods
Freddie and Clarence Busche, former Missouri convicts accused of multiple murders, were killed in a brief gun battle with Hanford E. Russell, a 40 year old farmer in a woods near El Pago, White County. Russell’s rapid response ended the chase after he returned fire with an automatic shotgun. Russell’s companion Mark Huckaby stood by as the two brothers, clad in tattered clothing, fled from a stolen car earlier that night after a windshield was shot out near Vilonia. Sheriff John W. Harris identified the Busches as suspects in the killing of Deputy Arthur Casteel in Missouri and in a string of robberies and kidnappings, with ties to other slayings, including at a rural dance near Sheridan and the night marshal Ed Potts at Malvern. A lead from Oliver Wadley, a former youth, helped pinpoint the spot, where Freddie Busche fired twice and Clarence Busche used a .45 pistol before both were mortally wounded.
