Foss Almost Didn’t Come Back From His First Aerial Duel
SAN DIEGO Calif May Capt. Joe Foss the M from Sioux Falls 5 D who shot down 26 Japanese planes barely escaped being shot down himself before he even had a chance to show his wizardry Capt. Gregory K Loesch squadron member from Montrose Colo recalled Monday that Foss tangled with half a dozen Zeros in his first fight Foss stalled while climbing after a Zero and made a perfect target as his Grumman hung in the air a moment The Zeros drilled him plenty Among other things his oil cooler was shot up He had no power and when he came in on a dead stick landing he was going about 150 knots 150 feet above the start of a runway where 90 knots is the speed usually traveled on a landing approach Loesch said Foss squadron figured he would crash into the trees beyond the runway but the now famous flier managed to slip down and stop just short of disaster.
