Planting Of Improper Seed Costs Dakotas Farmers

Farmers in North and South Dakota lose large sums yearly by planting unadapted or mixed small grain seed. A survey of 1281 samples showed 25 percent of hard red spring wheat unfit for planting, durum wheat 73 percent not recommended, barley and oats poor or of unknown varieties. The Better Grain meetings, backed by state colleges and USDA, aim to standardize varieties and improve seed purity, though work remains to reach ideal purity and market suitability.

Wesleyan Students Vote on War Pledges at Dakota Wesleyan

Wesleyan students at Dakota Wesleyan university voted during chapel period on war participation. Five five signed pledges to not participate except in invasion, forty one pledged to refuse any involvement, and seventeen pledged to participate if approved by the president and declared by Congress. Pledges align with Oxford, Brown University, and traditional American civic tests and will be sent to the U.S. president.

South Dakota Fires Reach 366 In First Quarter 1933

Pierre report shows 269 fires statewide from January to March causing $615,174 in damage and threat to $3,133,803 in property. Minnehaha County had 82 fires and $145,229 loss. Brown 31 fires $75,236. Perkins 32 fires $57,244. Causes include Sparks 54, defective flues 10, wiring 10, explosions 16, furnaces 23, gasoline stoves 1, short circuits 16, spontaneous combustion 12, stoves 38.

Onida Club Members Visit Blunt for May Day Event

Onida Study Club members traveled to Blunt for a Tuesday club visit. Contests games and readings entertained the attendees. May Day themed decorations followed by a two course serving as the afternoon closed. Mrs. Van Seaick presided as Blunt club chairperson.

Canova May 4 Special The Canova Parent Teachers Association elects officers for the coming year. Mrs. A. C. Wilson is president, Mrs. Frank Snow vice-president, Mrs. A. F. Voigt secretary treasurer. Committee heads named. Canova unit had the largest membership among smaller towns in the south district. Last meeting featured a varied program with the membership contest losers serving refreshments.

Uncle Sam Receives Gold From Aberdeen

Aberdeen reports about $100,000 in gold coins and certificates returned to the U S treasury under Roosevelt’s hoarding proclamation. Officials from two Aberdeen banks estimate the sum covers March banking holiday through May 1 deadline, as old gold issues came out of hiding following the order.

Miller To Have School Activities And Events

Plans for the end of the term are underway at Miller High and Grade schools. Commencement for Miller High is May 24 at the city auditorium with Harlan J. Bush as speaker and awards for diplomas athletic scholarships and national honor society. The baccalaureate occurs May 21 and the junior senior prom moves to May 14 with Steel's orchestra providing music. Grade school closes with exams May 23 and 24 and picnics scheduled May 25 and 26 by grade.

Miss Helen O Neil of St Lawrence has been engaged to teach English at Lake Preston high school for the coming year. A Yankton college graduate, she has taught in Frederick South Dakota and Wayne Nebraska high schools and has substituted at St Lawrence this past year.

Men Called for Brown County Civilian Conservation Corps

Aberdeen May 4 A call for 750 men from Brown county to join the Civilian Conservation Corps has reached county relief director George Pfeifle from the state committee. Men will report for examinations mid next week, with each family’s county aid reduced as men send home 22 to 25 dollars of their 20 dollar monthly check. In the past two weeks about 25 families left county or R F C aid, while 15 new families joined the list, leaving roughly 600 families still on relief programs.

Explosion Breaks Window At Martin Johannesen Barber Shop

Explosion followed a kerosene burner ignition in Martin Johannesen's barber shop on Saturday evening. The blast shattered the large front window but caused no injuries to Johannesen or three patrons. No fire started and authorities believe the incident could have been much worse if flames had spread to nearby buildings.
