Memorial to Sakakawea Bird Woman in South Dakota
A memorial obelisk to Sakakawea the Bird Woman will be built near Mobridge South Dakota this spring. The 40 foot reinforced concrete monument near the Black Hills Yellowstone divide will honor her role guiding Lewis and Clark in 1804 1805. Funds come from the Hickory Strike club with a district film tour and school music to accompany screenings. The project lists Dr W Kraushaar Mobridge as chairman and other local committee members. Sakakawea the Shoshone guide helped Lewis and Clark on the Missouri expedition and is buried in Corson County about 30 miles from the site.
