Spring storms hit Huron and Central South Dakota with a heavy snow blanket, producing around 65 inches of water in 24 hours and keeping temps near freezing. Roads worsened, rivers rose, and multiple towns reported several inches of snow with ongoing cold, wet conditions and forecast of more snow.
At Arlington Heights school during recess the Wells children Walter Ruth and Adeline ran to a blaze and found firefighters carrying their mother Anna Louise Wells from their home. The ambulance departed with her body as smoke hung over the scene.
The executive committee of Tammany Hall faced the task of naming a new leader to replace George W. Olvany. After an unofficial caucus failed to yield a candidate, observers doubt a chieftain will emerge from the 24 district leaders and 35 women co leaders. notable absent figures included James A. Falsy, Mayor Walker, Senator Robert Wagner, and former Governor Smith.
A March tornado struck Inbarrillton Alabama harming dozens and leveling more than twenty buildings over five miles. Miller Parker and Roosevelt Sulth died when a church used as a school collapsed. John Henry Lee was badly injured and not expected to recover. The church belfry and pullding were demolished.
Tom Reilly a farmer two miles north of Huron suffered multiple broken ribs when he was thrown from a hayrack yesterday afternoon. He was brought to a local hospital where X rays were taken to assess injuries. Reilly said the rack toppled after being struck by a truck. He remained in severe pain and could not make the trip to Huron yesterday.
Reno Nev March 22 Additional testimony from witnesses for Walker P Inman detailing how his wife was said to be caught in a whirlpool of night life leading to their separation was expected at the divorce hearing of the wealthy New York and Atlanta man here today. Charles Miller chauffeur for the Inmano family was to the middle of his story about Men Inmans personal affairs when court adjourned yesterday. He testified that Mrs Inmano had been involved in protracted drinking orgies tracing her moves from New York to Miami Fla and bringing In the names of several night club operators.
A fund to purchase a set of chimes for the temple was started by the 35th reunion class, received this week by Oriental Consistory No 1, Ohio. The reunion closed with a banquet attended by 400 members with Judge Ray Dougherty of Sioux Falls as toastmaster.
Legionnaires and Auxiliary members in the fifth district voted to go to Redfield for their 1930 gathering at the close of the annual meeting attended by nearly 150 delegates from 16 Central South Dakota towns. Mrs Berniece Ewing of Ashton was re elected Auxiliary committee woman and Mrs Ruth Dukes of Seneca, a former Huron resident, was chosen as her alternate. Work in the American Legion membership campaign will be started all over South Dakota in the near future. State Adjutant J. D. Mullaney of Watertown said the membership goal is 10,675 with 5,877 currently paid up, and 20,875 in the state. He urged reaching the quota by May 18 to contend for the national trophy, requiring at least 12,000 paid members. After separate meetings, they held a joint banquet and dance, with awards for membership gains and remarks by officials. The program included a memorial service for deceased members and emphasis on the new hospital project. Seven posts were represented with 200 attending, including Auxiliary members.
Sioux Falls has been selected as the 1929 convention city by the American Water Works Association out of over 200 cities. Rica Reese announces the event will be held in October and expects 600 officials to attend, with Kansas Missouri Nebraska Iowa and South Dakota represented by 300 to 400 delegates. Sioux City Iowa had contended but withdrew in favor of Sioux Falls.
Oklahoma City March 22 Impeachment articles alleging incompetency wilful neglect of duty and corruption in office were reported to the Oklahoma House by its investigating committee Eleven articles were listed against Chief Justice Charles W Mason ten against Justice Fletcher Riley and eleven against Justice J W Clark The report was filed by Representative J A Patterson chairman of the subcommittee that investigated the Supreme Court.
William J Blatt a Yankton pioneer businessman and fraternal leader died in Chicago at age 85 arriving in Yankton in the 1860s. He was charter member of Oriental Consistory Yankton grand high priest of South Dakota 1885 and past grand master 1885 86. He held thirty third degree Mason rank and was active in Odd Fellows orders with two children surviving.
Thirty four speakers from twelve high schools in Spink and Beadle counties gathered in Harom for district declamatory contests. Schools included Huron Athol Northville Redfield Ashton Mellette Frankfort Doland Virgil Cavour Brentford and Hitchcock. Winners in dramatic or humorous and oratorical sections to regional meet at Pierte. Judges to announce decisions late today after 2 and 7:30 PM contests at multiple school venues.
New York reports Jack Dempsey will team with Robert Fugazy of Metropolitan in a two year promotion deal for boxing matches in Detroit and other cities. The Dempsey Fugazy group would stage a Sammy Mandell vs Ray Miller title defense in Detroit on June 6 and consider building an arena there. A substitute for Miller would be named if Ray fails to defend against Jimmy McLarnin at Madison Square Garden. A Vienna report notes a national movie company with Austrian capital to be founded, with crisis measures favoring the firm and special rights in Austria.
The South Dakota board of regents ratified Herman G. James as president of the University of South Dakota. James, from the University of Nebraska, wired acceptance and is expected to start around July 1 or shortly after. He has a long record in education and public service, including roles at Nebraska, Texas, and other institutions.
H B Bid Roberts was placed under a 500 dollar bond after appearing before Municipal Judge Dick Haney on a charge of furnishing intoxicants to minors. A preliminary hearing was set for Tuesday April 2 at 8 PM. Roberts surrendered at the sheriff’s office after learning a warrant existed, issued following a police chief’s complaint naming Kenneth McMahon 19 and Robert Cook 37 as the parties furnished.
The Missouri River at Forest City fell about 1.5 feet Thursday night and continued to drop today after a six foot rise earlier in the day. Reports say fivearns were also falling but no flood danger. Ice along the river began running from the storm that started Thursday afternoon.
Evanston Illinois March 22 Joseph F Oelrich reported two men robbed him of a 1500 dollar ring and fled in a car He pursued but two motorcycle officers stopped him and the robbers were gone He was not charged with speeding to mollify him the officers opted not to press the charge.
