Huron Tracks Readies Under Winter Conditions

Huron college and high school track squads await a weather break to begin outdoor training. Indoor drills continue as coaches Bell and Coffey assess talent including Scalp ers new sprinters Gage Morrison and Youel, and Tiger veterans Pederson Sherlock Wiermeyer. The season opens with dual meets and invites, culminating in the state carnival May 21 at Huron with possible Drake meet and Dakota Relays participation.

Maier and Nichols Light Heavyweight Title Fight Set

Milwaukee’s David Maier faces Buffalo’s George Nichols in a National Boxing Association light heavyweight title bout. The lefthander clash could crown a new world champion as Rosenbloom’s rule ends, with Maier the slight favorite and a ten round decision unlikely. Nichols previously beat Maier until a cut favored Maier, who also holds a win over Rosenbloom.

Seven Coyotes Are Given Cage Awards

Seven members of the 1932 University of South Dakota basketball squad received varsity letters from the athletic board of control at Vermillion. Water Olson and Major Hoppell were declared ineligible with only three conference games on the schedule. Letters went to Adkins Parkston Walker Armour Maloney Madison Espe Salem Buck Madison Norton Watertown and Jenkins Sioux City I. Freshmen football and basketball numerals were not awarded under the new university policy, with awards to be finalized in May after fresh athletes’ eligibility is determined.

Wallace Continues Comeback Tonight at Madison Square Garden

Four Teams Remain In N D Cage Meet

Four Remain In Gopher Tourney

Thief River Falls, Winona, Chisholm and Mankato advanced in the 20th state basketball tournament in Minneapolis. Crosby-Ironton and Northfield were upset, Winona defeating Crosby-Ironton 35 to 27 and Mankato beating Northfield 17 to 15. Thief River Falls beat Balaton 31 to 17, and Chisholm eliminated Princeton 20 to 11. Semifinals schedule has Thief River Falls vs Winona and Chisholm vs Mankato.

Crowningshield Named Miller High Coach

Bernard R. Bud Crowningshield of Mitchell accepts a contract to coach athletics at Miller High School for the coming year. He has three years as assistant at Mitchell High and led successful B teams. A Mitchell High graduate, he played and coached at the University of Illinois and South Dakota.

Huron Girl Leads State College Women’s Athletic Association

Marian Bates of Mitchell, a junior science student, was chosen president of the Women’s Athletic Association at a special meeting. She has excelled in tumbling, hockey and kittenball and serves as a student instructor in tumbling. Other officers named include Edith Smith as vice president, Doris Conway as secretary, Anna Thue as treasurer. Their terms begin with the spring quarter and run for one year.
