Miss Pyle of Huron declares candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor in the May primary. She pledges fiscal restraint and liquidation of the general fund overdraft, advocating a businesslike state economy and support for an updated banking code while opposing political obligations.
State polo tournament planned as a major fair attraction with a 10 acre polo field to be seeded this year and finished next year. Board members, led by President C L Chase, cite polo as a driver of horse breeding and a potential top draw for the expo. Local extension and county dairy officials discussed expanding educational exhibits and enlarging the dairy show.
A Chevrolet coach stolen from S. B. Laverty of Hitchcock last Friday night was found in Aberdeen on Saturday and traced to the Huron theft. Deputy A J Larsen says Aberdeen police expect an arrest soon after telegraph alerts and officer Meeks confirmed the suspect’s likely capture. The hold up at the Standard Office and Ninta street left the attendant missing about five dollars.
Chairman Wickersham of the Hoover commission said the 2.75 per cent beer proposal would not meet the prohibition problem. He spoke at the Capitol after testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Norris investigation into enforcement and was asked about the Dyer proposal to permit such beer. He smiled and said he did not think that would satisfy a robust taste.
Miller was arrested Saturday night and pleaded guilty in municipal court before Judge Dick Haney. He was fined 100 dollars and deprived of the right to drive a car in Huron for one year. J. P. Sauer city attorney represented the city and J. T. RicCutlen defended.
In La Dorada, Colombia on March 18 20 to 30 river passengers and crew were feared dead after the Bucaramanga burned when its petroleum cargo ignited. Captain Antonio Velez died on the bridge. Passengers escaped by port holes into a sea of burning fuel, with only about 10 survivors from a list over twenty.
The Young Women’s Christian Association announces its 1930 budget driven finance campaign from April 1 to 4. The goal is 6182 dollars beyond cafeteria contributions for general work including administration, programs for county girls, camps, repairs, and maintenance. Mrs. F. C. Hocking chairs the campaign with a team of workers and initial gift volunteers meeting today to finalize advance gifts.
Dayton Beach Florida racer designer Louis Coatelen travels to Florida to supervise Kaye Dan as he tests the Silver Bullet on hard packed sand between March 15 and 30. The aim is to break Major Henry Seagrave’s 231 mph mark, with Coatelen present to critique and witness the attempt. Coatelen, a Frenchman raised largely in England, has backed aviation engines and streamlined designs for British ships and aircraft.
Gerald Heberman aged 16 and Raymond McCormick aged 17 were sent to Madison state penitentiary for life. The boys left Prairie du Sac Wisconsin last week after stealing a car, crossing into Iowa, robbing a Luxemburg filling station, and killing Dyversville marshal Henry Handfeld as he tried to halt their escape. Handfeld pleaded guilty yesterday to first degree murder charges.
Sioux City voters expected to cast ballots in the municipal primary today. Mayor Tom Huff and two other candidates seek the mayoral nomination while Commissioner of Public Safety Guy Andrews heads a field of 14 more candidates.

A free public music recital at the Huron college school of music chapel is planned for next Thursday evening March 20 at 15 o clock. Performers include Elsie Marshall Hitchcock Marjorie Prybarfér Marie Morrow Ruth Wallace Elizabeth Jackson Anne Wutsch organists Rena Van Heuvelen Margaret Royh and vocalists Voralists Martha Drew Aldene Camilla Curtis and Vava Byerly under direction of Besse Stackpole and Hardin A. Van Deur sen.
A fire at I. H. Williams's home, 925 Dakota avenue, caused about 200 dollars in damage. Fire began from defective wiring, smoke from a floor register, and flames spread between walls. Firemen chopped through the roof to reach the blaze, and chemicals plus a hose line took about an hour to extinguish. The house was insured.
Springfield Illinois March 18. Petition for rehearing filed by national protest group lawyers alleging Supreme Court rules were violated in the Modern Woodmen of America rate case. Lincoln Nebraska March 18. Eighty five couples celebrated their golden weddings in Nebraska last month.
Huron Air cadets organize squadrons and schedule a flying contest for the second week in April. About 60 members met as chief pilots were named for each squadron. The winner will advance to Vermillion for the state wide event sponsored by South Dakota University.
Theodore Freiheit of Eureka 8 D claims a new egg eating record in an American Legion contest at Columbia. He ate 60 uncooked eggs in 12 minutes, outpacing a rival who admitted 81. Freiheit, a German army veteran and elevator painter, finished with a sandwich and malt. Authenticity was vouched for by Frank J. Whitlock and Robert Kicinsasser.
Codington county Republicans resorted to a draft to obtain candidates for the May primary. C. B. Nyon was induced to run for state senate. House hopefuls include John H. Hanten Water town L. C. Gooch South Shore and M. B. Peterson Wallace. DD. K. Loucks and T. N. Babcock decline to run.
A Senate tariff debate centers on imported books deemed immoral by Sen Smoot and challenged by Sen Cutting. The fight questions whether customs officials retain censorship power under the tariff bill with a proposed discretionary allowance for classics when imported for non commercial purposes.
Yankton dispatch reports Asa A. Grant South Dakota’s oldest fireman, age 76, died after months of illness. He led riverfront business here for 30 years, aided fraternal orders, and helped organize the state firemen’s association. Born February 4, 1854 in Two Rivers Michigan, he leaves two daughters and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements not yet set.
Three more candidates for state legislature announced plans to seek Republican nominations in the May 6 primary. W C Peterson and Huron attorney Martin Kimm will run for state senator while M Whisman, a Huron insurance man, seeks nomination as state representative. Peterson and Kimm are the second and third entrants for Beadle county’s senate seat, Whisman is sixth for the three Beadle county representative posts. Peterson, 37, a Huron native, has practiced law since 1918 and has served as city school board clerk. Whisman has held non-elective posts in the South Dakota legislature and is treasurer of the Huron city school board. Other Republican contenders for senator include W A Johns. for representative, G J McDonald, W T Quale, F P Matz of Huron, Charles E Wilson, and Richard Semoha of Wolsey.

Mitchell May 18 A ticket led by McNamara and Corey backed by the anti administration faction of the democratic party plans a May primary clash against Gov Bulow and Dr McCullough for US Senator and governor. McNamara, L. E Carey Wagner and others were named at a mass meeting criticizing Bulow’s bank report stance and pledging a campaign. The group formed a committee to promote nomination papers and criticized the administration.
Two prayer meetings precede tonight revival service at the First M E Church. The inn of the church hosts 7 10 prayer in Good fellowship Class room and Wesley hall for the young people. Three of the Sunday School classes will be guests for the evening service. A gift given to each teacher who has 110 percent of class enrollment present. Rex Moon, known for negro music study, will sing at the revival service. Capacity crowd expected for tonight’s service. Afterward the big chorus choir rehearses for The Hab Jah Chorus from The Messiah. Wednesday is fathers and sons night with program highlights for both groups. BE H Breummer chairs.
Freddie Dunn, the Sioux City bank robber, entered Fort Madison Iowa penitentiary early today to begin a 40 year sentence. He was escorted under guard after sentencing yesterday and transferred from the Sioux City facility.
