Should Improve Quality Of Stock In South Dakota
Brookings March 14 The dairy problem in South Dakota is not a matter of increasing herd numbers but of improving stock quality. G Heebink of the civic college extension service says better breeding can be achieved through widespread use of high producing sires. He notes the average quality of dairy herd sires has fallen over the past four to five years as farmers struggle with prices, forcing purchases of inferior animals. Emphasis should be on saving good herds and keeping the best bull calves, with breeders encouraged to exchange sires to prevent inbreeding. Officials suggest relying on fieldmen and state dairy associations for stock information, and avoiding costly purchases of cows and heifers unless necessary. The official 1935 start shows 387,000 mills, cows and heifers on South Dakota farms, the lowest since 1931, with declines in milk cows and heifers by about 13 percent from 1934 to 1935. The dairymen say many sold cows were low producers or undesirable, and removing them may improve future stock quality.
