Service Salary Hike Gains Support in Senate Budget Clash

Washington March 5 A proposal to raise pay for the military won wide support led by Senator Reynolds Democrat North Carolina who said he would push immediate legislation if a committee approves. The plan would set a uniform pay scale for enlisted men and all ranks across the Army Navy Marine Coast and Public Health Service starting at 42 a month from 21. Senator Gurney Republican South Dakota backed the measure tentatively but questioned the scope and cost noting a 6 million strong fighting force could add about 750 million annually. He urged do away with the 21 dollar base and raise second lieutenants pay to a livable level though taxpayers burden remains a concern. No administration stance yet from departments.
