Minority Stops Measure In South Dakota Senate War
The South Dakota Senate rejected a $135,000 biennial appropriation for a state contact officer after Democratic minority and Sen Paul Kretschmar amended the bill to let the governor appoint the officer instead of the attorney general. Former senator L. J. Bailey now serves as contact officer aiding veterans to secure federal aid. A 4 to 19 final vote blocked the two thirds needed. Kretschmar then changed his vote to allow reconsideration.

Jensen Advocates Mine Income Tax Proposal
Pierre March 4 Governor Jensen urged both legislative houses to pass the house bill applying a net income tax to the mining industry. He praised House modification of Rep H I Mosley s bill to fit his special message and warned that combined ore tax and 100000 ton exemption risks court invalidation. He cited inequalities between a merchantile company with 200000 net income and a mine producing 100001 tons at four dollars per ton recovery, stressing an insurance policy suggestion.
