Short story better fit to show today’s transitions says Lyons
Vermillion March 2 Sarah Lyons University of South Dakota English assistant professor told radio listeners that the modern short story offers a fleeting glimpse of transitions better than the novel. She cited local color dialect journalism and Americanism as dominant elements and listed Edith Wharton Ring Lardner and Fannie Hurst among writers shaping American life. Lyons faulted American writers for lacking polish and rushing to meet popular demand.

Three Factors Highlighted for Agriculture Education
BROOKINGS March 2.44 Three important factors should be emphasized in training young people in agriculture according to Dean C Larsen of South Dakota State College. First, provide top educational facilities and equipment. Second, encourage farm youth to pursue higher education and stay in rural fields with opportunity and fair pay. Third, select and guide youths for maximum usefulness in the industry. Dean Larsen notes land grant colleges support high standards and cooperation with federal and local authorities to lead in agricultural education and leadership in South Dakota. He urges farmers to combine new discoveries with broad business understanding and stresses college education as the path to skill and knowledge. He adds that college is not only costly but also a training station for life and personal talent development.
