Nazis Report Three British Armed Merchantmen Sunk

Berlin reports the sinking of three British armed merchant ships totaling 11 000 tons by a German submarine in May. Additional submarines claimed 38 000 tons sunk. Air raids targeted armament works and port facilities in southern and central England with troop movements on Jersey and Guernsey. Secretary Wallace in Washington announced the federal food stamp plan to distribute surplus farm commodities to relief recipients will be extended to Huron and Beadle County. The plan has also been approved for Watertown, Codington County, Aberdeen and Brown County, with Beadle County creating a $10,000 revolving fund to finance operation. Organization work expected soon in Beadle County.

War Taxes Rise On Monday For Five Billion Rearmament Fund

Washington reports that a five year five billion dollar rearmament fund will trigger new and higher taxes starting Monday. Excise, commodity and service taxes rise 10 to 50 percent on items from beer and gasoline to radios and cigarettes. Personal exemptions fall, adding more taxpayers and a 100 percent super tax on normal income.

Bank of Wilber Robbed for 2500 in Nebraska

Three gunmen robbed the Bank of Wilber in Nebraska, pistol whipped cashier Ed Beck, and escaped with an estimated 2500 dollars. State Sheriff George W Lang suspects escaped prisoners from Fort Madison were involved, with no witnesses besides the missing cashier. It was the second Nebraska bank robbery of the year.

Board To Sell Washington School and Church Hospital Plans

Plans for disposing of the abandoned Washington grade school at Iowa and Fourth Street SE were announced by Supt A J Lang after a city school board meeting. St Martin's Catholic Church said it would seek the property.
