Advise Harvest Of Eastern Hay For Drought Stricken South Dakota
Farmers in eastern South Dakota were urged by the State College extension service to harvest all available roughage to preserve feed amid widespread drought. Cattlemen west of the Missouri River are moving east for pasture and winter feed, with hay to be taken from roadsides and fields to aid western stock and maintain herd quality. A preliminary pasture list for eastern counties is being compiled and will be updated, as stockowners plan to avoid market jams by shifting cattle to forage centers and eastern pastures. Western cattlemen, including Harding county’s W. B. Willad, report many cows and heifers must be moved or shipped to pasture or market to ease drought pressure.
