Tinker Concludes Shelterbelt Tour
Lincoln Neb June 17 E W Tinker assistant chief of the U S Forest Service predicted the agency would continue the mass tree planting program of the Great Plains shelter belt on a basis of farmer cooperation. He said if funding from the $2 5 million forestry bill is secured the project will shift toward protective planting with seedlings provided and cared for by farmers then turned over for maintenance. Tinker toured plantings across Nebraska and nearby states and urged farm participation noting the plan could change the region while stressing the need for broader and deeper plantings to prevent soil erosion. The official praised the high survival rate of trees planted in 1935 and 1938 and cited the program as a demonstration to farmers of benefits from shelter belts.
