Light Plant Sale Sparks Pierre Vote In Special Election

In Pierre a special election was held on a $430,000 bid from Montana-Dakota Power for the city light plant amid a heated fight between municipal and private ownership. The power company promises a development program and would assume about $15,000 in debt. Opponents gathered at the city auditorium with Mayor J. Hipple speaking. Cir cuit Judge John F. Hughes ordered the vote after petitions claimed the city commission stalled. Last fall a similar election drew a high turnout when Pierre declined Northwestern Public Service’s $325,000 offer plus refunds.
