Pierre June 13 With reports from Dakota counties of animal disease outbreaks, health officials urge vaccination of horses to prevent sleeping sickness. Immunization using chick embryo vaccine reduced deaths, with 3,000,000 horses vaccinated in 1939 and disease incidence dropping to 0.37 per 1000 among the vaccinated.

Sanded mix marks four goslings near governor’s lawn

The report notes four young geese with mixed markings seen near the Capital Lake and the governor's mansion lawn. Last year’s progeny show similar traits from both breeds. The game director said numerous cases suggest interbreeding effects on syns and pheas in the area.

Sanborn Committees To Meet At Woonsocket

The Sanborn County Use Committee will meet at the courthouse in Woonsocket in June, according to County Agent Fred E. Larson. Topics include a program for weed and idle land grasshopper control, and a report from the forestry committee. Officers are President Martin Anderson of Woonsocket and Vice President Lee Dolan of Woonsocket, with the county agent serving as non voting secretary.

Woman chosen for CAA training in Sioux Falls

Clara Schneider a 22 year old telephone operator in Sioux Falls was named the sole woman among 10 civil aviation administration training scholarship winners. She completed theory flying studies and holds a solo flight hour, with parents' permission from Scotland. The government funds her full course along with other male winners.

Fire crews finally reached the upper level after improvised access using two ladders, allowing rescue operations to proceed. The incident involved emergency responders contending with limited entry points as they secured the scene and assisted individuals to safety.

Car Hits Bicycle On Main Street. Teen Dies Later

An automobile traveling on Clear Bake's main street struck a bicycle ridden by a teen with no light. Paul Holt, 19, said he did not see the bicycle. The rider, a boy connected to Mr. and Mrs. John Van Gronigall, was taken to the Air Force residence where he died about 20 minutes after the accident in front of the residence.

Coyotes menace sheep in Sanborn County

Sanborn County reports sheep killings by coyotes. Three sheep were slain on Clarence Derland farm six miles north of Woonsocket, while Leigh Rubert near Forestburg lost twenty. County Agent Larson says coyotes avoid shut-in sheep in farmyards but advise closing in sheds as they fear buildings. Coyotes are still small enough to be dug out if dens are located. State bounty is $3 for coyote pups and $5 for old coyotes.

Potter Fair Board Elects New Members

Potter County Fair Board elected seven new members at a recent meeting with three former members retaining office. New members include vice-president Roy Houck secretary James O Connell treasurer Kes Miller and several Hinckleys. Potter County Fair slated for August 19 to 21 with usual entertainment. officials include Harry Hixson Ray Smith and Joe Simmons. A separate note reports Billy Williams five injured when struck by a car. wheels went over him but no bones broke. treated at Hudson hospital and sent home.

Faulkton District Crop Outlook Bright Despite Pests

Prospects for a good Faulkton area crop rose last week as rainfall totaled about an inch and a half. Warm days caused little damage while rye, wheat, barley and oats look strong with rye heading out. Farmers expect rye harvest by July and corn planting is near complete. Plowing largely finished for soil conservation. Grasshoppers appear in numbers but have not yet damaged fields. Large amounts of grasshopper bait are being distributed. Wet weather aids growth with frequent clouds and cool periods. Overall, Faulk County crop prospects are exceptionally bright.

Northern State Teachers College honored several educators for long service at a Tuesday banquet in the college cafeteria. Musical instructor and band director Howard Eigon Goodsell and education instructor Michael Miles Guhin received tokens of esteem, while Vice-president R. Lipscomb presided.
