Drift Of Strato Balloons Averages 258 Miles In Flight
Rapid City reports eight stratosphere balloons with available drift records averaging 258 miles. The National Geographic army air corps bag is larger and heavier, making precise drift difficult. Captain Orvil A. Andersen expects travel not to exceed 200 miles unless upper winds strengthen. The record drift is 6 miles by Cosyns and van der Bist in 1924, with August Piccard's 1931 flight at 90 miles. A Russian balloon covered similar distance, and one Black Hills flight ended near Holdrege Nebraska, 220 miles from base.
