All Must File Report On Tax

South Dakota's gross income tax rules require all subject individuals to file monthly, quarterly, and annual returns. Returns go to the income tax division in Pierre. Monthly payments are due by the fifteenth. quarterly estimates and end of quarter returns precede year-end filings. An annual return captures the year’s taxable income and may rectify earlier errors.

Summer School Opened at Miller

For high school students to makeup work or earn extra credit, Supt. J. H. Kramer conducts a summer school in Miller. Classes run 7:80 to 14:5 a.m. Three courses offered. Eight students enrolled: bookkeeping five, journalism and debate six, English IV five.

Thieves Asked To Return Odd Sized Car Wheels

Sioux Falls residents report a theft from George W. Green’s car. The thieves moved the vehicle and stripped it of every movable part and personal articles. Green appeals for the return of the wheels due to their odd size and difficulty in selling.

S. F. Mayor Calls Police Payroll Cuts To Save Budget

Sioux Falls Mayor George W. Burnside says the police department drains most of its $68,000 yearly allocation with five months left and recommends suspending seven of 34 patrolmen. City Commissioner Ellis O. Smith denies waste, noting shifts shortened to six hours and salaries cut accordingly.

Hand County Picnic Brings 200 At Parrish Grave Site

North Hand County Sunday schools held their annual picnic at Parrish's grave near Cottonwood Lake with over two hundred in attendance. Hazel Miller of Wheaton Congregational church led the program after a picnic dinner and kittenball games followed. attendees enjoyed the day but did not swim. Death of Mr August Grabow Linked to St Lawrence Family

The Grabow and Jarmuth families mourn the death of Mr August Grabow of St Lawrence. He had cancer for some time and his passing prompted notices. Mrs Flossie Stechman runs the Grabow store in the absence of the owners. In Frankfort, Mrs Jennie Wolner and Mrs Malving Sullivan prepared to attend the state Women’s Relief corps convention in Pierre, with Sullivan the delegate and Wolner senior aide, expecting to return Thursday.

Huron Student Ties For Top Freshman Honors

Robert Wagner of Huron ties for highest freshman scholastic standing at Dakota Wesleyan University with straight A grades for the year. He shares the Mary B Ely scholarship, and has excelled in debate earning state second in Extemporaneous Speaking and provincial third. He led freshman class as president and belongs to Daedalian Literary Society. He won first in Signa Tau Delta short story contest.

Wind And Heat Damage Grains Reported At Groton

High temperatures and winds last week caused notable damage to small grains in the Groton area. Future loss depends on the next ten days’ weather, with localized showers north of town and about an inch of rain on Sunday night.

Hand county Sunday school plans county convention

A Hand county Sunday school meeting at the O Neill home led by President Andrews Blackmer of St Lawrence discussed ten tentative plans for the county convention to be held in St Lawrence on the third Sunday of August. Miss Kate Bawdon of Ree Heights served as secretary and attended.

Frankfort Sunday School Delegation Attends District Convention

A large Frankfort Sunday school delegation attended the district convention at Achion. The vested choir from the Methodist church sang in the morning service. Rev G D Brown preached the morning sermon. A church basement picnic dinner followed at noon.

Drowsy Inebriate Sets Fire in Groton Jail

Groton June 7 The city’s fire department responded to a smoke filled jail cell after a Saturday night drunk, in a fire proof building, toppled by a lighted cigarette. The sleeper escaped unharmed. bedding for the cot must be replaced.

State Sends 46 Students to Six-Week Fort Snelling Drill Camp

Brookings June 7 Forty six juniors and seniors in advanced military science at State College will report to Fort Snelling June 11 for six weeks of intensive field training under U S Army officers. The program is part of a four year course ending with a commission in the officer reserve. Wool prices remain firm to stronger with moderate turnover. Demand was steadier as manufacturers’ heavy covering lessened urgency, while small supply types saw continued call. Territory wools showed activity with firm to higher prices, Texas wools quiet. Pogue Receives West Point Appointment From Brookings

Michael Pogue of Brookings, a senior in commercial science at State College, has been named to the United States Military Academy at West Point and will report July 1. The appointment came from Senator W. J. Bulow of Beresford after a March 7 physical at Ft. Snelling. Pogue, son of Mr and Mrs Wesley E Pogue, is a Brookings High School graduate and a standout in ROTC, drill, track, and local clubs.

David Robinson Has Close Call In Ocean

David Robinson son of Mr and Mrs A Robinson of Huron had a narrow escape when a sloop he sailed in with H Prescott Shreeve of Asbury Park New Jersey overturned three miles south of the Sandy Hook coast guard station in Sandy Hook bay on May 20. They clung to the upturned craft about an hour before the coast guard reached them. Robinson who works for the American Telephone and Telegraph company at Asbury Park was expected to visit his parents mid month.
