War Department Races to Meet Invasion Onset

Washington June 6 officials at the War Department were fully manned as invasion of Europe began. General Marshall remained at his desk while reports flooded in from the Pentagon. Secretary Stimpson was away. Assistant Secretary McCloy arrived about 10 am. Eisenhower’s communique and Pershing background notes were rapidly distributed to press and War Department staff.
