Allied Sub Sinks 6000-Ton Transport and Four Subs Lost

Allied headquarters reported an enemy 6,000 ton troop transport sunk with inferred 12,000 Japanese deaths in the southwest Pacific. Four Japanese midget submarines were sunk in the Sydney harbor raid. Two supply ships were also sunk and another damaged as Japanese forces press on in three Chinese provinces amid intensified battles along the China coast and Burmese fronts. American officers Stilwell and Brereton arrived in Chungking for talks with Chiang Kai-shek as heavy casualties mounteast and west of Burma and along the Canton–Hankow line.

Legion Sets National Convention for Kansas City in 1921

The American Legion will hold its national convention in Kansas City Missouri in September 1921 instead of New Orleans due to coastal position and transport worries. The change was decided by the national executive committee after lengthy deliberation among seven cities.

State rests case against Douglas Bushfield linked to consideration

In Aberdeen June 4 the state rested its case against W G Douglas and Judge Van Buren Ferry as defense motions to dismiss were denied. Witness Arthur Moodie testified as Douglas allegedly profited from state funds while Burns brokered a stock exchange plan tied to Governor Bushfield. Burns described proposed consideration to Hammerquist and Bushfield, including offers of money, while recounting failed efforts to recoup losses from state money.

Beadle County Eighth Graders Honor Top Distinction

Grote bound over for circuit court in child incident

Arthur S. Grote known as Sonny was bound over to Beadle County Circuit Court after waiving preliminary hearing. He could not post $2000 bond and was jailed to await December 7. State charges allege he lured a 12 year old girl on a motorcycle and took her to a rural barn near Huron for assault. The girl was examined by a local physician after the incident. The defendant, who is married, reportedly admitted guilt. Trial set for June.
