Weekend Food Specials Warn Employers on Child Labor Laws
Minneapolis June 1 report warns employers to follow state and federal child labor laws as thousands of South Dakota students vacation. TAL Hill, regional wage and hour chief, urges cooperation to prevent underage workers from unsafe jobs. Key rules: minimum ages 14 to 16 under conditions, 18 for hazardous work, interstate commerce coverage, and $10 daily fines for violations. South Dakota rules can be obtained from Agriculture Dept at Pierre. When both federal and state apply, the higher standard governs.
