Milbank Sheriff Killed by Ex-Convict in Milbank

Milbank sheriff Melbourne Lewis was shot to death while questioning Clifford Hayes a former Lemmon inmate released from the state penitentiary. A 12 year old boy and a filling station attendant were wounded by the same rifle. Hayes, 30, faced first degree murder charges and was taken to Sioux Falls for safekeeping amid public fury.
