Urgent Need For Pharmacists Seen Broad Shortage
Brookings June 21 Nearly 14 000 or 17 5 per cent of the nation s registered pharmacists now are in the armed services Dr F J LeBlanc dean of the State College pharmacy division said today In normal times the nation has approximately 80 000 pharmacists Of these about 2 100 retire die or enter other types of work annually They are replaced in turn by younger men and women entering the profession from the 65 accredited pharmacy schools and colleges of the country The retirement rate has been about 2 100 a year yet the number of graduates each year has been somewhat lower For the last five years the average number of graduates in pharmacy has been 1 630 not quite enough to offset the normal retirement rate Pharmacy retail organizations and Pharmaceutical manufacturers have become alarmed at the decreased number of registered pharmacists and are cooperating in an effort to place greater numbers for young persons in training for the profession This cooperation includes scholarships for needy students and vocational guidance efforts Any boy or girl who enjoys scientific work or retail selling will do well to investigate possibilities of the pharmacy profession Besides the retail drug trade a wide variety of vocational pursuits in the manufacture testing and use of drugs and research work offers avenues of advancement for a young pharmacist The dean pointed out every indication seems to predict a continuing shortage of trained pharmacists even after the war due in part to increased demand for services of persons trained in pharmacy and chemistry for industry
