See No General Water Shortage See No General Water Shortage
In a July 21 briefing W C Mendenhall director of the geological survey warned that no general drinking water shortage is predicted but widespread rains are needed to avert a serious drought in the worst-hit areas. He noted wells and streams are more plentiful than in 1934 overall, with scattered Nebraska Montana western North Dakota seeing supplies below prior reports. State-by-state figures show towns relying on deep wells generally adequate, but those dependent on the James River face shortages. Red River areas report scarce farm wells despite plentiful pasture water. Domestic water is very low in parts of Montana and North Dakota, with heavy hauling reported, while Nebraska ground water and Wyoming supplies run low, similar to 1934 levels. Huron, South Dakota bucked the trend with ample river and well supplies.
