In Minneapolis on July 19 federal mediator Rev. Francis J. Haas said groundwork is laid for an early settlement of the truck drivers strike. He noted both sides are frank, reasonable, and eager to end the dispute as meetings with employers and strikers proceeded.
San Francisco labor leaders voted 191 to 174 to end the mass strike as business activity resumed in the metropolitan area. Eastbay transportation and key routes were set to restart, with streetcars and shops reopening while officials warned to stay vigilant amid ongoing maritime labor tensions.
Portland officials promise a complete investigation into a waterfront shooting that endangered Senator Robert Wagner and other officials. Special guards fired on an automobile carrying union leaders after it allegedly did not halt. Wagner rode in an adjacent car.
Fair tonight and Friday with slightly cooler conditions. In northeast and east central portions expect generally fair skies tonight. South Dakota area also shows fair conditions tonight and Friday with only modest cooling.
Rising hope spurred the federal government to settle quarrels tearing California with strikes. President Roosevelt favors a reasonable solution and common sense. Officials work cautiously as Labor Secretary Perkins says federal San Francisco agents will act promptly on immigration violations.
Beadle county commissioners completed a money and credits hearing adding 362.46 to the tax revenue on this property class. A total of 2013 dollars of moneys and credits was assessed against 28 persons. About three people attended, some proving transfers or worthlessness of mortgages and other credits listed in state records. The tax action, 30,615 will be 363.4, AuditorAmler reported.
George Robertson, 72, of Sioux Falls, and his brother James P. Robertson, 68, of Stoney Mountain, Manitoba, reunited after nearly 11 years apart. Born in Scotland, they went to Canada as boys. George arrived in Sioux Falls in 1287.
In Terre Haute Indiana July 189? a picket line around the Home Packing and Ice plant renewed the five week strike. One man Fred Christenberry, Beat Cutters junior, was wounded as pickets seized guard Pete Houck who they claimed struck Christenberry several times. Houck was turned over to police.
The weather office notes a 106 degree high in Huron after 3 pm, notes last night’s 75 degree low, and records May 30 as the previous 105.9. Meteorologist M R Hovde predicts cooler temperatures tonight and tomorrow morning with fair skies and continued heat relief. An area of high pressure over Canada is moving south toward the Dakotas and Minnesota.
In Washington dispatches Paul Mallon explains how President Roosevelt stays in touch while aboard a Pacific cruise. Navy wireless and air mail relay papers and messages to the White House, with duplications to guard against loss. Communications speed shows minutes to hours, aiding awareness of strikes on the Pacific coast.
Major William E. Kepner and Capt. Orvil A. Anderson left Rapid City in an army plane on a low altitude survey of the path the balloon may follow to the stratosphere. They expected to pass Pierre and Huron, stop at Sioux Falls, and return over southern South Dakota, at 8000 to 10000 feet.
Thomas Hibben of Washington, representative of the federal rural rehabilitation division, conferred with South Dakota officials in Pierre to discuss the rehabilitation program. Attendees included Governor Berry, A M Eberle, C L Chase, and H M Cass as the Rural Rehabilitation corporation awaits final Washington approval and officials hope Hibben's visit speeds up start of the program. Acting Governor Ole HL Olson took possession of the governor’s offices in Bismarck revoking the special legislative session called by William Langer. Guards surrounded the capitol while the Assembly convened under Olson’s proclamation and Langer loyalists prepared for a contentious session.
